City of Hamilton has banned non-essential outdoor water usage for a week

Be ready to put those hour-long showers on hold for a bit; not just because they’re pretty wasteful in general, but also because the City of Hamilton is asking all residents to restrict their outdoor and non-essential water usage for the next week until Monday, July 13th.

The reason for this temporary mandatory ban is related to ongoing construction happening at Woodward Water Treatment Plant which, due to project delays, is running into a period of hot weather in which local water usage is expected to increase.

However, the construction continuing this coming week may limit the plant’s capacity to treat enough water to keep up with the forecasted spike in demand.

Some heavily water-based activities the city is demanding that all residents hold off on for the next week include filling pools, washing cars, using sprinkler systems, or watering lawns with a hose. For the latter, it is recommended that lawn or plant watering be done by hand.

The parts of Hamilton affected by this request include the Hamilton Mountain and the lower city, as well as Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook, Stoney Creek, and Waterdown.

The City of Hamilton originally issued these restrictions as voluntary requests; however, they have since upgraded the restrictions to a mandatory ban on outdoor water usage. Read more here.
