GO Transit is making masks mandatory on all trains and buses

As parts of the province continue to reopen and Ontarians begin to emerge from their houses and travel around once again, Metrolinx has announced that they are making masks or face coverings mandatory on all of their GO Transit vehicles including GO buses, GO trains, and UP Express.

This mandate, which officially takes effect today, also extends to the inside of all GO Stations, as well as on platforms while commuters wait to board their bus or train.

Many other transit systems, including those on a municipal level, are instituting similar mandates on their vehicles, including Toronto’s TTC as well as Hamilton’s own Hamilton Street Railway (HSR).

Beginning July 21, riders will be required to wear a face covering when traveling on GO Transit and UP Express. GO and UP staff are already required to wear face coverings.

Metrolinx announced the new policy officially last week, and since that announcement, they are already reporting roughly 90 per cent compliance from GO Transit riders. The transit company is taking additional steps for health & safety, including the installation of clear plastic dividers between seats on some of their vehicles.

The mandate also lines up with multiple Ontario municipalities taking steps to institute bylaws in their own communities that make masks and face coverings mandatory in enclosed public spaces to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

So far, cities like Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford, and Toronto have put these bylaws into effect.
