Hamilton actor Nick Cordero dies at 41 after battling COVID-19 complications

Hamilton-born Broadway star Nick Cordero died on July 5th at the age of 41 after an intense 95 days in hospital battling complications from COVID-19.

Cordero, a graduate of Westdale Secondary School and alumnus of Hamilton’s Theatre Aquarius, was a Tony Award-nominated actor who had led Broadway shows including Waitress, A Bronx Tale, and Bullets Over Broadway.

He was originally admitted to the ICU at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles on March 31st after contracting COVID-19, and placed in a coma and on a ventilator shortly after. The weeks and months that followed saw an endlessly devastating list of complications including numerous mini-strokes, blood clots, and lung infections.

As a result of these devastating complications, Cordero received a leg amputation and, recently, was being looked at as a candidate for a double lung transplant.

Updates on the ups and downs of Cordero’s condition were given almost daily via Instagram by his wife, fitness instructor Amanda Kloots, who also rallied a community of worldwide supporters, fans, and loved ones to keep positive thoughts flowing and continue cheering Cordero on in his fight.

Yesterday, that long, hard fight came to a heartbreaking end.

“I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere. My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him,” wrote Kloots in a post on Instagram. “Nick was such a bright light. He was everyone’s friend, loved to listen, help and especially talk. He was an incredible actor and musician. He loved his family and loved being a father and husband. Elvis and I will miss him in everything we do, every day.”

Since the announcement of Cordero’s death, social media has been absolutely flooded with condolences, stories, and memories from friends, family, colleagues, and total strangers all over the world; a clear sign of the massive number of people who were touched and impacted by Cordero and his story.

A GoFundMe page, which has been collecting donations since Cordero was admitted to hospital, is still receiving support by the minute for Kloots and their son Elvls. Anyone who’d like to make a contribution can do so here.
