Hamilton libraries will be waiving all fees for overdue books during COVID-19

Borrowed some reading materials from the library and worried about overdue fees? Worry no longer; the Hamilton Public Library (HPL) has just announced that it will be waiving all fees and fines for cardholders with overdue books during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In what the HPL is calling a “fresh start for everyone,” any late fees or fines accumulated between March 15th, 2020 and December 31st, 2021 will be totally waived, ensuring a stress-free experience for locals who want to borrow library materials during the pandemic.

On top of this, the HPL has announced that all fines and fees on library materials for children and teenagers are being completely eliminated going forward.

“Hamilton is built on innovation, resilience and compassion. The library is offering everyone in Hamilton – kids, teens and adults – a fresh start by resolving and waiving library fines until December 31st, 2021,” explains Paul Takala, CEO and Chief Librarian for the Hamilton Public Library.

“All youth material fines have been eliminated permanently. HPL is your library. Now, everyone can equally access the library. And those who can, are invited to pay-it-forward to help others.”

With the HPL’s board passing the initiative, the waiving of library fees will be in effect immediately at all Hamilton Public Library locations.

Borrowing library books from the HPL currently looks a little different; due to safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, all physical branches are closed from public access until further notice, and library materials can be reserved online and scheduled for pickup at a few select branches across the city.

More information is available on the Hamilton Public Library website.
