Hamilton’s hospitals currently have zero COVID-19 patients

Hamilton’s hospitals are celebrating the fact that, as of Tuesday July 8th, they have zero COVID-19 patients admitted for treatment.

Both St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences have reported that their hospitals are currently free of patients who have tested positive for COVID-19; the first instance of this in 112 days, or almost four months.

To date, 141 total people have been hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 complications, and the hospitals continue their support of those who are now negative for COVID-19 but still working through their recoveries.

While the news is great and speaks well for the city’s management of the pandemic, it’s important to note that things are far from over and the city itself is not COVID-free, with 855 total confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases reported in Hamilton since the start of the pandemic – 44 of which resulted in deaths.

“While this is a great milestone for our hospital teams, the pandemic is not over,” said Melissa Farrell, President of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. “We want to thank our staff, physicians, volunteers and community partners for their continued support and vigilance.”

The public is encouraged to continue observing all established health & safety protocols, including practicing physical distancing and wearing a mask in public spaces, staying home as much as possible, not gathering in large groups, and regularly washing hands with soap or hand sanitizer.

On Friday, a motion will be brought to Hamilton city council for a bylaw that will enforce the wearing of masks and face coverings in public spaces such as retail storefronts, supermarkets, and public transit. Other municipalities, like Toronto, have already instated this bylaw.
