Gone are the days of carrying around needlessly large piles of nickels, dimes, and quarters, because the City of Hamilton has finally given its payment systems for paid street parking a much-needed upgrade.
From now on, local motorists who need to take advantage of the city’s street parking and municipal lots can do so by feeding the meter digitally via a mobile payment app on their smartphones.
It just got easier to pay for parking in Hamilton – the new “pay-by-phone” parking app allows you to pay, track and extend your parking anytime, on all on-street parking meters and Municipal parking lots in #HamOnt right from your smartphone! https://t.co/wEXndtwsZb pic.twitter.com/3GC5ZEjkwq

By downloading the Passport Parking app through the App Store or Google Play, Hamiltonians can create a free account and use it to pay for parking quickly and efficiently anywhere in the city where Passport Parking signs have been placed. Simply enter the given 4-digit location ID when paying, and you’re off to the races.
From there, people who have parked with Passport can even top up their parking through the app without needing to hustle back to their car. For those that don’t care to use the app, don’t worry: payments via coins or credit cards will still remain in place as always.
Mobile parking payments are a local initiative that’s long overdue; while other municipalities have already integrated the technology, Hamilton has still mainly stuck to using classic old parking meters, many of which have only accepted coins for payment.
The upgrade does come at a bit of a price, with the rate of street meters increasing from $1.50 per hour to $2.00 per hour going forward.
However, it’s a small price to pay for a service that is majorly streamlining Hamilton’s paid parking system.
