Highway 6 begins constructing new expansion and connection to 401

A new expansion project has kicked off that will see Highways 6 and 401 expanded between Hamilton and Guelph, according to the provincial government.

The project, which is already underway, is intended to streamline and directly connect both highways while also removing the bottleneck that takes over near the town of Morriston, which currently reduces Highway 6 to a single lane.

The Ontario government has said that Highway 6 is one of the province’s busiest two-lane highways, and that this project is one of multiple in a province-wide, $2.6 billion expansion and repair plan for Ontario’s highways.

“Highway 6 is a key transportation corridor in the region. That’s why we are making historic investments to expand and modernize it,” said Ontario transportation minister Caroline Mulroney.

These new renovations will expand Highway 401 from 6 to 10 lanes, including two managed lanes between Highway 6 North and South. They will also include a 5-kilometre, multi-lane divided highway that circumnavigates Morriston.

News of deadlines for the expansion project, as well as expected plans regarding traffic detours, are still to come.
