James North shop White Elephant is closing its doors

It’s a sad day for lovers of local shopping, as a beloved boutique on James North has announced that it will be closing its doors at the end of next month.

White Elephant, a tiny treasure trove for ethical Canadian-made clothing, jewellery, and other accessories, has been a staple on the booming James North strip for 12 whole years. On Sunday, they announced their bittersweet move to formally close up shop as of August 24th.

“It has been our greatest honour to be welcomed and loved by you, to do what we love these past 12 years, and to do it together every day as pals to boot!” said White Elephant’s owners in their farewell post on social media.

Hello! Today we have some news that might make you sad, but is truly GOOD news for us here so we hope that you will wrap yourselves in all the warm and fuzzy feelings that we are sending out through this virtual tool that connects us all. It has been our greatest honour to be welcomed and loved by you, to do what we love these past 12 years, and to do it together everyday as pals to boot! But! Change is constant and ever flowing and we will be closing White Elephant as of August 24, 2020. As we all shift through this transformative time to build a more equitable community and world, we personally hope that we have been able to bring awareness of the importance of shopping small, of shopping locally and ethically, of consuming critically, of consuming less, of caring for and mending the things that you own, of creating welcoming and inclusive spaces, of feeling REALLY GOOD about the way that you look, of supporting all members of your community, of collaboration and not competition, of using your voice and getting political, of taking care of yourself, of taking care of each other. These ideas are what White Elephant was built on and what we hope you’ll take with you as memories. Our next post will have all the fine print about our WITH YOUR SAFETY IN MIND BIG TIME EVERYTHING MUST GO RETIREMENT BONANZA SALE which begins NOW online, but right now in this space right here we want to thank you all deeply, immensely, genuinely, and truly from every single inch of our hearts and souls for taking this wild ride with us over the years, and especially during these last few months. Thank you. Take care. We love you. In Solidarity and Love, Hollie and Jane

That announcement was met with an outpouring from local lovers of this one-of-a-kind shop, highlighting just what a singular entity White Elephant was among Hamilton’s small businesses as a shop that puts direct focus on items independently crafted by local artists, artisans, and designers.

“So sad – I haven’t seen many shops around here that exclusively promote and sell Canadian made brands in the same way,” said one fan of White Elephant on Instagram.

However, with the heartbreaking closure also comes a massive blowout sale of White Elephant’s remaining stock of clothing, jewellery, and beyond. Their website is currently loaded with all kinds of well-curated finds, and many of them are being offered at deeply discounted rates.

Locals are free to shop online through White Elephant’s website, or can book a private appointment for an in-person shop this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. After that, White Elephant will open to the general public every day – with mask-wearing and other COVID-19 safety measures in place, of course – until the store’s official closing date.
