McMaster University is now requiring masks when visiting the campus

Ahead of the official Hamilton city council vote that will see face masks be made mandatory in enclosed public spaces, McMaster University has announced that anyone visiting any campus buildings for the foreseeable future will be required to wear a mask or face covering.

In an updated policy announcement on the university’s website, McMaster has said that, based on the most recent recommendations and advice from public health, all publicly-accessible buildings on campus will now require visitors to wear a non-medical mask while indoors; particularly when proper physical distancing is difficult to maintain.

The types of spaces included in this policy are lobbies and entrances, hallways, elevators, food service areas, and stores.

Masks and face coverings may also be required in non-public working areas such as classrooms, lecture halls, and offices if physical distancing is challenging to maintain. However, if the people in that space find that maintaining physical distancing is possible, masks are not required.

Though the policy will be important as a safety measure for those who still need to visit campus buildings for various reasons, it won’t necessarily be something most McMaster students and staff will have to worry about just yet: like most other post-secondary institutions, McMaster University will be hosting its fall term remotely through online classes.

McMaster’s own mask mandate comes ahead of what will likely be a citywide mandate by next week, as Hamilton city council is set to ratify a new bylaw that will require Hamiltonians to wear a mask or face covering while visiting indoor public spaces such as shops, supermarkets, community centres, public transit, and places of worship.
