A Swoop Airlines flight from Edmonton to Hamilton was forced to land in Thunder Bay to deal with an “unruly passenger” said local police on Sunday night.
The passenger allegedly started smoking in the washroom, which set off the in-flight smoke detectors. Then, he allegedly continued to be disruptive by swearing at and insulting the flight crew.

Police were on the tarmac waiting to remove the passenger after the pilot landed in Thunder Bay at around 9:30 pm on Sunday.
The 47-year-old Hamilton resident was taken into custody by the Thunder Bay police. He has been charged with one count each of mischief over $5,000, smoking on board an aircraft and causing a disturbance while flying. He was expected to appear in court on Monday.
Swoop has been flying out of Hamilton since 2018 and is one of the major airlines at Hamilton International Airport.
The company was supposed to keep expanding in North America after the release of its Summer 2020 schedule, but current COVID-19 restrictions have put flights outside of Canada on hold.
