A drive-thru event replacing Winona Peach Festival is happening amid COVID-19

Amid the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, pretty much every major in-person event in the Hamilton area has been cancelled for 2020.

However, as was seen when Burlington’s annual Ribfest pivoted to a drive-thru style affair, there’s still a push to adapt some events to safer formats in an effort to not let this year being a complete and total write-off.

One of the big heartbreakers was the cancellation of the Winona Peach Festival, which pulled the plug on its 2020 iteration a few months ago out of safety concerns; and while the official organization isn’t pivoting to a replacement format, an independent event in Winona is endeavouring to capture the peachy spirit of the Peach Festival in a special drive-thru event.

A collaboration event by Fifty United Church and Panzeroli Wagon – two longstanding fixtures of the usual Winona Peach Festival – the Peach Drive Thru is set to take place the weekend of August 28 to 30 for locals to get their hands on some peaches and pizza (the two main food groups) in a safe, distanced manner.

Fifty United Church is now taking pre-orders with e-transfer payments through their website for fresh and frozen homemade peach or cherry pies, as well as an assortment of jams and jellies. A specific pickup time must be arranged while pre-ordering, and some pickup slots are already filling up!

If you’re feeling peckish too, the Panzeroli Wagon will be onsite serving up their famous panzerolis: an hybrid take on an Italian classic that’s basically a dippable mini panzerotti roughly the size of a ravioli.

The Peach Drive Thru promises to be one of the tastiest events of the summer, and while there won’t be any famous peach sundaes to go around this time, at least some of the spirit of the Winona Peach Festival is being kept alive in an unlikely, unforgiving year.

Get your orders in now through the Fifty United Church website.
