Locals in their 20s are over half of Hamilton’s recent confirmed COVID-19 cases

Though Hamilton’s overall management of COVID-19 cases has held steady for the last while, the city is nonetheless still regularly recording new confirmed cases among residents; and notably, over half of those new confirmed cases are among locals in their 20s.

On August 5th, the city reported 17 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 10 of those being residents between the ages of 20 and 29. Most of these cases have come from either community spread or close contact with someone positive for the virus.

This trend isn’t a new one. There have been multiple points during the pandemic’s impact on Hamilton in which new recorded cases were predominantly 20-somethings; a fact that led the City of Hamilton to launch an advertising campaign targeting that age demographic and reminding those residents to be strict about physical distancing.

While some of these particular spikes in cases among Hamilton’s younger residents may indicate that some in their 20s have been getting too lax with COVID-19 health & safety guidelines, there’s also the fact that many in that age group are working in public-facing essential services such as retail and the food industry, leaving them more vulnerable to being exposed to COVID-19 and other illnesses.

Since the beginning of the pandemic here in Hamilton, the city has seen a total 192 confirmed COVID-19 cases in those aged 20 to 29, making up 21 per cent of the city’s overall confirmed cases: the largest percentage of any other age group.

To date, Hamilton’s overall number of confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases is 908, with 841 of those cases considered resolved and 45 deaths. There are currently 22 known active cases in the city.
