Six finalists chosen for King William Street gate and public art project

After a call for submissions was extended to Hamilton artists back in January, 43 competitive proposals have been narrowed down to six contenders as the potential designs for the forthcoming King William Street Beacon and Gate Public Art Project.

In an initiative that marries public art with functional purpose, the King William Street Beacon and Gate Public Art Project will see a new retractable gate built at the intersection of King William Street and James North that will be used to temporarily close a stretch of King William off to vehicle traffic.

The purpose of this gate is both to pedestrianize King William – a popular nightlife spot with numerous restaurants and bars – as well as to provide another striking art installation to the city’s downtown core.

The six artists and collectives shortlisted for their designs are Xiaojing Yan, David Trautrimas, Team Make, Lilly Otašević, Petra Matar & David Hind, and Owen Johnson. Renderings of their designs, as well as their artist statements, are available to view on the City of Hamilton website.

The Hamilton community is invited to check out the shortlisted designs and artist statements, and offer comments and feedback by August 16th as to which design they’d most like to see implemented for the project. From there, a jury will meet to discuss the shortlist and make an official selection, taking the public’s feedback into consideration.
