COVID-19 case confirmed in student at Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School

The city and local public health have confirmed the first student case of COVID-19 in the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) at Bishop Tonnos Secondary School.

A release from the city explains that the HWCDSB is currently working with public health officials to facilitate contact tracing for the positive case, which was discovered on Friday.

“We understand the concern this causes staff, students and the families of the Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School community,” says Patrick Daly, chairperson with the HWCDSB.

“We will be working closely with Hamilton Public Health Services and following all Ministry of Education and Public Health guidance.”

The identity of the infected person has not been released publicly, out of respect to everyone involved and their privacy.

It is also not clear how the infected student contracted COVID-19, nor how many others may have been exposed to the virus.

This new confirmed school-related case quickly follows news of the first confirmed case attached to the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB), who saw a staff member at the Umbrella Family and Child Centre of Hamilton within Templemead Elementary School confirmed to be positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.
