Hamilton launches pilot project for automated speed enforcement in school zones

In a new safety initiative, the City of Hamilton has announced it will soon be launching a 12-month pilot project of automated speed enforcement in the city’s school zones and community safety zones.
The project, which is set to begin officially on October 1st, will see Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras activated within 12 select locations across the city chosen based on existing speed data such as school zones and community safety zones where speed and collisions have been a particular problem.
To help increase the safety of vulnerable road users in school zones and community safety zones, the City of Hamilton will activate its Automated Speed Enforcement cameras and start issuing tickets to speeding drivers beginning October 1.

These automated cameras, which will be operating at one of the 12 locations at a time over the course of the next year, will be able to clock speeding drivers in these select zones, and issue tickets and fines to offenders.
“Our community’s vision is for zero fatalities or serious accidents on our streets and roads. That’s why we are introducing Automated Speed Enforcement in select school zones and community safety zones known for high levels of speeding,” explains Hamilton’s Mayor Fred Eisenberger.
“We believe this will increase driver awareness of posted speed limits and significantly decrease injuries and fatalities as a result of motor vehicle collisions. This will help to keep our neighbourhoods and roadways safe for everyone.”
This new ASE action plan is a piece of the city’s ongoing Vision Zero initiative, which seeks to reduce speeds and injuries as a result of collisions and other accidents.
