A school in the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) has confirmed its first case of COVID-19 in a student; the first student case in a Hamilton public school.
The case was confirmed at R.L Hyslop Elementary School, where a student was found to test positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, September 27th. It isn’t clear how long the student has been infected for.
According to a statement from the school, the student’s last day in the building was Tuesday, September 22nd and has since been isolating at home.

On top of attending class, the student was also part of R.H Hyslop’s before-and-after-school program, run by Today’s Family, for students under the age of 12.
Out of an abundance of caution, the school has said that local public health has contacted any potentially affected staff members, and has instructed all other students in the infected student’s cohort to self-isolate at home for 14 days.
While this marks the first student case within the HWDSB, multiple schools in the Hamilton area have already reported positive cases of COVID-19 connected to their institutions, including a student at Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School and a staff member in the child care facility at Templemead Elementary.
