Hamilton tightens limits on social gatherings as COVID-19 cases climb province-wide

As part of a province-wide mandate by the Ford government, Hamilton has put tighter restrictions and limits on in-person social gatherings as COVID-19 cases continue to rise across Ontario.

Until recently, social gatherings in Ontario were permitted to have a maximum of 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors, provided proper physical distancing measures were possible to maintain.

However, after a week where Ontario saw a consistently sharp spike in new confirmed COVID-19 cases – with many daily numbers topping 400 new cases – Ontario Premier Doug Ford has instated tighter limits on gatherings, effective immediately for at least the next 4 weeks province-wide.

Now, Ontario’s limits on unmonitored social gatherings and organized public events have been tightened to a maximum of 10 people indoors with distancing, and 25 people outdoors with distancing.

Additionally, merging gatherings with a combination of indoor and outdoor activity is not permitted; for instance, a gathering of 35 people, with 25 outdoors and 10 indoors, is not allowed.

However, these newly-instated limits have exceptions. Gatherings held in staffed facilities and businesses like restaurants & bars, movie theatres, convention centres, gyms, banquet halls, and performing arts facilities are still permitted under existing rules and public health & safety measures.

“I support the provincial government’s decision to expand the limit on social gatherings to the entire province,” said Hamilton’s Mayor Fred Eisenberger in a release.

“I urge all Hamiltonians to stay the course and heed Public Health and provincial measures and guidelines in place to keep us all safe. We all need to continue to do our part to protect our collective health and stop the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.”
