HSR introduces new PRESTO e-tickets as buses go paperless

As the city moves towards paperless fare payment on local public transit, the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) is one of the first transit systems to introduce a brand new fare option using PRESTO’s new smartphone app.

Intended to be a digital solution for more casual transit riders who may not need a full reloadable PRESTO Card, the new PRESTO E-Tickets app allows Hamiltonians to buy single e-tickets through the app on their phone prior to rising an HSR bus.

From there, just before boarding, locals can “activate” the HSR e-ticket in the app on their smartphone and show it on their screens to the transit operator as proof of payment.

Tickets that are purchased through the app are valid for up to 365 days. Once activated for use, each ticket will remain valid for the typical 2-hour duration of a standard paper ticket on the HSR.

The e-tickets are only valid on a single transit system, and can’t be used to jump between transit options in the way a standard PRESTO Card typically allows.

This new innovation comes just prior to the HSR’s elimination of all paper bus tickets and monthly passes, switching exclusively to PRESTO Card or e-ticket fare payments. HSR will stop producing and selling paper tickets and passes in October, making the switch officially on November 1st.

HSR will continue to accept paper tickets that were already purchased up until December 31st of this year.

The PRESTO E-Tickets App can be downloaded for free through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
