The Ontario government has introduced a legislation that could see all residential rent frozen for most rent-controlled and non-rent-controlled units in 2021.
This new legislation, if passed, would be a step towards additional financial relief for Ontarians amid the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic by disallowing rent increases for residential units for all of next year, ending on December 31st, 2021.
The bill would also support the province’s small business owners by extending the ban on evictions for commercial tenants.
Today, our government proposed changes that, if passed, would freeze rent in 2021 for most tenants and extend the ban on commercial evictions.

“From the very beginning of this pandemic, our government promised the families, workers and small business owners of this province that we would have their backs and provide them with the support they need to get back on their feet,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford in an announcement.
“The crisis is far from over and the threat of a second wave is real, as are the challenges it will bring. That’s why we need to take the necessary steps now to help families keep a roof over their heads and small businesses keep their doors open.”
The legislation is expected to be passed later this fall.
