Ontario reports over 300 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in one day

As students return to school province-wide, Ontario has just reported 313 new confirmed cases of COVID-19; the largest single-day increase in over three months.

The uptick in daily cases comes following a number of consecutive days in which the province reported daily counts of over 200 new cases of the novel coronavirus, indicating an acceleration in new infections across Ontario.

According to Ontario’s health minister Christine Elliott, 78 per cent of the newly reported cases are primarily concentrated in three main regions, with 112 reported in Toronto, 71 in Peel, and 60 in Ottawa.

Additionally, Elliott says that 67 per cent of the total new cases were found in younger demographics; specifically, those under the age of 40.

The new case numbers bring Ontario’s overall total to 44,817 cases since COVID-19 first hit the province. Of those cases to date, 2,816 have resulted in death.

Of that total, Hamilton itself has seen 1,026 confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases to date, with 45 deaths.
