The Music Hall launches campaign to upgrade its stunning performance venue

One of Hamilton’s most unique live music venues just launched a fundraising campaign as they prepare to update and renovate their stunning space in preparation for the eventual return of safe live performances.

The Music Hall, located within New Vision United Church at the corner of Main and MacNab, transformed its stunning 150 year-old church hall into a performance space and has since become one of Hamilton’s favourite venues for live concerts and other events.

That is, until the COVID-19 pandemic hit Hamilton and performance venues of all types were forced to shut their doors indefinitely out of concern for public safety.

But rather than wait around, The Music Hall has joined forces with local cultural organization Cobalt Connects to help raise the necessary $2 million in funding to turn the venue into a true socially-engaged community space and cultural hub of the city; particularly at a time where Hamilton is seeing the heartbreaking loss of many local independent arts venues, including The Staircase Theatre.

“We’ve lost a few incredible venues over the COVID period. Artists are genuinely concerned about the state of the infrastructure that will be there to support them when this is all over,” says Jeremy Freiburger, Chief Connector and Cultural Strategist at Cobalt Connects.

“Having venues of scale like The Music Hall will ensure that we have spaces to safely present indoors, with restrictions in place, and for larger gatherings in the future. This size of a space is absolutely essential in the local venue ecosystem.”

In partnership with local architecture firm mcCallumSather, The Music Hall plans to undergo an upgrade and transformation that both enhances the venue and sensitively maintains the integrity of its heritage.

Plans for the upgrades include a new HVAC system, new gender-neutral washrooms to accommodate large crowds, upgraded technology for lighting & sound, a new elevator and loading zone, updated backstage amenities, and increased electrical infrastructure.

With the campaign officially launching on Friday, funds will be raised through a combination of community fundraising, grant support, and impact investors.

The campaign is also planning to release a special Do Well by Hamilton album as a donation perk, which will feature tracks by a host of Hamilton’s incredible music talent.
