In a small but valuable step towards making Hamilton’s recreational amenities more accessible, the city has acquired a special accessibility mat for use at Hamilton’s lakefront beaches so wheelchairs and other mobility devices can more easily make their way down to the waterfront.
Environment Hamilton shared video footage of the mat being rolled out for use at the portion of the Confederation Park beach near the lift bridge, close to a parking lot and accessible walkway.
Some good news! @cityofhamilton purchased a mat for mobility device users to access the beach. It's nearest to the parking lot/beach area by the lift bridge. It's out 7am-3pm weekdays & 7am-7pm wkends. Hopefully first of many access points along lakefront! @djnontario pic.twitter.com/Jvx2SiYw90

“Hopefully first of many access points along (the) lakefront!” said Environment Hamilton in a post to social media.
It’s important to note that the accessibility mat is not currently a permanent fixture of the beach, with city staff rolling it out from 7 am to 3 pm on weekdays and from 7 am to 7 pm on weekends.
Still, this is an exciting start for making one of Hamilton’s best recreational pleasures more accessible to its wheelchair-using residents!
News of the new beachfront accessibility mat also comes at the same time as the official grand opening of the new wheelchair swing at the playground in Gage Park; the first swing of its kind at a public park in the city.
