15 designs selected for Hamilton public art series honouring healthcare workers

A jury of healthcare workers, graphic designers, and artists has selected the 15 winning designs to be part of a new Hamilton public art project honouring the city’s healthcare professionals.

The art series will see a number of the city’s normally bland traffic signal boxes covered in unique wraps depicting artwork and designs by a variety of local visual creators, each one in some way paying tribute to the efforts of healthcare workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city originally saw 92 artworks submitted for consideration, which were then judged based on artistic excellence, technical feasibility, and ability to deter graffiti and vandalism.

Those submissions have now been narrowed down to a diverse top 15 artworks that will officially be printed on graffiti-resistant wraps and installed on a number of traffic signal boxes surrounding Hamilton’s hospitals and healthcare facilities.

Each of the 15 artists will receive a fee of $650 for their work, and the installation is planned to take place over the next 6 to 8 months.

“This project provided the City with an opportunity to support artists and for artists to provide some joy and express our collective thanks to the healthcare sector as we move through these difficult times,” said Carrie Brooks-Joiner, Director of Hamilton’s Tourism and Culture Division.
