At least 32 COVID-19 cases now linked to outbreak at SpinCo Hamilton

Hamilton public health has confirmed even more COVID-19 cases tied to the outbreak at local fitness studio SpinCo Hamilton, bringing the total of known connected cases to 32 as of Saturday.

The outbreak at the James Street North fitness studio was officially declared on Monday October 5th when three cases of COVID-19 – including one staff member and two patrons – were confirmed as being tied to the facility.

Since then, the number of connected COVID-19 cases has been climbing as local public health carries out contact tracing, first confirming an additional 8 cases on Thursday and a subsequent 10 cases on Friday.

Today, another 11 cases have been added to the current total of 32 known cases, which includes 31 patrons and one staff member according to the COVID-19 page on the City of Hamilton website.

In the meantime, SpinCo has suspended all classes and closed its facility for 14 total days while public health investigates.

Hamilton public health also says approximately 100 people connected to SpinCo may have been exposed to COVID-19, and that even with the studio following health & safety protocols, the intensified breathing brought on by physical activity makes it a high risk activity for COVID-19 transmission; especially as patrons have the option of removing their mask while exercising.

This news comes at the same time as the Ontario government forcing the closure of indoor dining and fitness centres in COVID-19 hot spots such as Toronto, Peel, and Ottawa as part of a modified return to Stage Two of reopening. However, as of now, Hamilton is not included in this order.
