City of Hamilton urges locals to forgo large gatherings for Thanksgiving

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to accelerate across Hamilton and the province as a whole, the Ontario government and the City of Hamilton are both advising residents to approach the forthcoming Thanksgiving weekend safely.

In fact, the city is recommending that any Thanksgiving celebrations be limited to those in your immediate household out of an abundance of caution, or performed virtually with family or friends via video chat on a platform such as Zoom.

This recommendation is in line with the provincial government’s advisory that the previously instated 10-person social bubbles – which allowed locals to closely socialize with the same consistent group of 10 people regardless of household – be burst for the time being.

Though the provincial guidelines on gathering sizes are still in place, with maximum 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors, it’s important to remember that gatherings of this nature with people outside of your immediate household should strictly adhere to proper physical distancing and mask wearing.

“The best thing to do is to keep your gatherings small and with those you already live with,” said Hamilton’s Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

“Most importantly, if you’re sick, stay home. Keep your distance from people you don’t live with. Wear a mask indoors or when maintaining physical distance is a challenge and wash your hands.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford shares similar advice on his social media. “I know it’s tough, [but] we need to stop the spread of COVID-19,” said Ford on Twitter.

Ontario reported 583 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, with 18 of those new cases found in Hamilton residents.
