COVID-19 outbreak confirmed at a school in Hamilton’s Catholic board

Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Elementary School has been confirmed to have an outbreak of COVID-19, which marks the first outbreak within the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB).

Though other schools in the HWCDSB have certainly seen confirmed COVID-19 cases as the fall term is underway, this is the first official outbreak declared in a Hamilton school based on a number of criteria.

“According to the COVID-19 guidance: school outbreak management on the Government of Ontario website, an outbreak in a school is defined as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and/or staff (or other visitors) in a school with an epidemiological link, within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the school (including transportation and before/after school care),” explains the City of Hamilton in a media release.

Though detailed information on the infected individuals is unavailable out of respect for their privacy, it is known that the outbreak currently consists of two staff members at the school.

The HWCDSB has said it is currently working with Hamilton public health in facilitating contact tracing and helping to manage the outbreak.
