Multiple COVID-19 cases have been confirmed attached to Shannen Koostachin Elementary School in Hannon, marking the first outbreak of COVID-19 declared in a public school within the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB).
Though local public health isn’t specifying how many cases are involved in the outbreak at this time, they have said they are currently working with the HWDSB to facilitate contract tracing.

Though other public schools in the HWDSB have seen COVID-19 cases confirmed this school year, Hamilton public health defines Shannen Koostachin Elementary’s outbreak through some specific criteria.
A school outbreak is defined as two or more confirmed COVID-19 cases found in students and/or staff within a 14-day period, where at least one infection could have been reasonably acquired within the school facilities, including bus transportation and before or after school care.
This outbreak was confirmed just hours after the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) confirmed its own first outbreak of COVID-19, with Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Elementary School seeing two coronavirus cases in staff members.
