COVID-19 testing is now available at two Hamilton pharmacies

People in Hamilton can now get tested for COVID-19 at pharmacies in order to help reduce the high demand at testing centres across the city.

Two Shoppers Drug Mart locations are offering tests by appointment only to approximately 50 people per day for those showing no symptoms. Stores at 101 Osler Drive in Dundas and 2110 Rymal Road in Stoney Creek are some of the first in the city to offer the service.

Assessment centres in Hamilton are still pushing capacity doing about 1,100 tests every day at the West End Clinic and the King and West 5th campuses of St. Joseph’s Healthcare.

The Dave Andreychuk Arena assessment centre closed over the weekend with the West 5th centre taking on the additional testing until it closes and a new centre opens at Mohawk College on October 23rd.

Hamilton’s delay in testing is also affected by the timeline for receiving results. It currently takes up to eight days for people to receive their results.

It was announced by the Ontario government back in September that pharmacies across the province will be able to offer testing. The additional test sites are part of the fall preparedness plan drawn up by the provincial government to help test, trace, and isolate COVID-19 cases.
