Hamilton awarded $10.8 million for affordable housing by federal government

Justin Trudeau’s federal government has just awarded Hamilton $10.8 million in support of building rapid housing in an effort to address some of the city’s affordable housing crisis.
This funding is the result of the federal government’s plans to allocate $1 billion to a Rapid Housing Initiative that will support the creation affordable housing in municipalities across Canada.

Hamilton’s Mayor Fred Eisenberger took to Twitter to express gratitude to Prime Minister Trudeau for the funding, which will help address one of the city’s most pressing social issues affecting low-income residents.
“Thank you @JustinTrudeau, @cafreeland and @HonAhmedHussen for addressing our affordable housing pressures in #HamOnt by providing $10.8 million in guaranteed funding that will help provide vulnerable and low-income residents with good quality and stable housing,” tweeted Mayor Eisenberger.
While the increasing lack of affordable housing in Hamilton has long been an urgent issue, one of the most recent pushes came when transit company Metrolinx announced plans to demolish 21 buildings purchased along King Street East for the now-defunct Hamilton LRT project; a move that saw pushback from locals who thought the vacant buildings should have been converted into residential units for low-income Hamiltonians.
