Hamilton tightens COVID-19 safety guidelines for fitness studios

Hamilton public health has introduced new interim guidelines for COVID-19 health & safety protocols to be followed by gyms and fitness studios in the city.

The new guidelines follow the outbreak that occurred at James North fitness studio SpinCo Hamilton, which to date has seen over 70 primary and secondary COVID-19 cases confirmed and around 50 households, schools, healthcare centres, and other businesses affected in various ways.

According to Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton’s medical officer of health, all gyms and fitness facilities in Hamilton, as well as other recreational activities, are now required to follow a stricter set of measures going forward.

These measures include maintaining at least 3 metres between each person involved in any exercise or physical exertion activity, a new capacity limit of 10 people (including staff) per indoor group fitness class or training session provided at least 3 metres can be maintained between individuals, and mandatory mask-wearing at all times including during exercise.

Additionally, no singing or shouting will be allowed in classes, and any fitness facility’s HVAC system must be well maintained.

Public health points to the heavy expulsion of breath during fitness activities raising the risk of potential COVID-19 transmission in an enclosed space.
