Hamilton’s daily rate of new COVID-19 cases reaches highest point to date

With 111 new COVID-19 cases confirmed over the long weekend and an average of 25 new cases each day within the last week, Hamilton is seeing its largest daily rate of new cases since the pandemic first hit the city.

This is a considerable uptick compared to just a week ago when the rolling 7-day average was around 11 cases per day; a number comparable to the highest points of the first wave’s impact on the city.

A portion of this jump in cases can also be attributed to the COVID-19 outbreak at James North fitness studio SpinCo Hamilton – the city’s largest to date – which started with 3 cases last Tuesday and has since climbed to over 60 confirmed cases found among patrons, staff, and some secondary family members and friends.

The city is urging residents to stay the course and be strict on the already-established COVID-19 protocols, including staying home except for essential trips, maintaining a physical distance of at least 2 metres from those outside your immediate household, washing your hands frequently, and wearing a mask when in public spaces.

The Ontario government has also recommended that residents now stay away from the concept of the 10-person social bubbles – which were established to allow people to make close contact with up to 10 people in a self-contained social group – and now only socialize closely with those in their immediate households.

As of the most recent report, Hamilton currently has 195 known active cases of COVID-19 in the city, with an overall total of 1,407 cases since the start of the pandemic. There are also a number of active outbreaks in the city, including at SpinCo Hamilton, Sacred Heart of Jesus Elementary School, and Shannen Koostachin Elementary School.
