Niagara-area dog first in Canada to test positive for COVID-19

A dog that lives in the Niagara Region is the first in Canada to test positive for COVID-19.

The dog has shown no symptoms of the virus and became infected after the humans in its household experienced an outbreak, says an Ontario press release.

It’s currently believed that dogs are at low risk of contracting COVID-19 and passing it along to others.

But, officials in Ontario are still working to determine how the virus affects other species.

“There is stark uncertainty about what these infections mean in animals and how this virus behaves in various animal species,” it says in the press release.

Although the Niagara-area dog is completely fine, the Office of the Chief Veterinarian for Ontario is still advising that people stay at least two metres away from pups that are not in your household.

They have also said to keep your dogs and other pets in isolation with you if you have symptoms of COVID-19.
