Ontario might make Daylight Saving Time permanent year-round

Don’t you just hate turning those clocks backwards and forwards twice each year?

Well, Ontario may soon see Daylight Saving Time officially become permanent, if a new government-supported bill is ultimately passed.

The bill, called the Time Amendment Act, comes courtesy of Ottawa West – Nepean MP Jeremy Roberts who tabled it on Wednesday in a call to end the biannual changing of clocks for Daylight Saving Time and simply make it permanent year-round.

If passed, the bill would mean it stays lighter outside for longer all through the year; however, the province of Quebec and the state of New York would also have to be on board to have these changes implemented.

A move to permanently instate Daylight Saving Time has numerous perceived benefits, including on mental health and wellbeing as Ontarians would end their work or school days and be able to enjoy more daylight afterwards.

The bill has passed a second reading in legislature at Queen’s Park.
