The history behind one of Hamilton’s oldest ghost stories

The Dark Lady has been allegedly haunting Custom House in Hamilton for over 100 years with many locals being spooked by its paranormal activity.
The historic Custom House, now the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre, has been a destination for those looking to get close to the paranormal.

The site is also a major stop for many ghost tours around Hamilton that show some of the city’s scariest locations.
The story of the Dark Lady is that she was a young woman who came from England. Her parents sent her to Canada after she was raped by a prominent and influential man.
She travelled by ship and fell in love with the captain on the trip over. They had a brief affair. When the ship started to arrive into Hamilton’s port, the captain remembered he was married and strangled the young woman so he wouldn’t experience any problems back home. Her body was supposedly dumped in the basement vault of Custom House.
Throughout Custom House’s history, many accidents and unusual incidents have been blamed on the Dark Lady.
A scaffold collapse that injured the building’s previous owner is thought to be the infamous ghost with the incident being unexplainable.
Over the last few years, tours have been experiencing incidents thought to be activity from the Dark Lady. One paranormal investigator cited that the spirit spelled out many messages on a Ouija Board.
There have also been occurrences of girls around 16 or 17 years old, the age the Dark Lady was when she was murdered, becoming physically ill while in the building with paranormal experts saying it was like the ghost was trying to possess them.
The Dark Lady continues to be one of the most famous ghost stories in Hamilton with Custom House being a popular destination for those looking to study the paranormal.
