As Hamilton finds itself in the ‘red zone,’ the annual Gore Park Christmas Ferris Wheel is sadly cancelled for 2020 amid the pandemic.
The news of the cancellation comes shortly after the city announced that the Christmas Ferris Wheel, which usually offers free rides to Hamiltonians throughout the holiday season, would still be going on despite COVID-19.
Sad news #hamont… Amusement rides have been prohibited in stage RED and as such we will not be able to run the Ferris Wheel this year. We are of course disappointed but it is important that we keep everyone safe! pic.twitter.com/CkMkMxHj0l

They even had the usual COVID-19 safety measures in place. Riders would have been required to wear a mask and properly physically distance while waiting in line, and not attend if they were feeling unwell.
That said, the safety risks amid the pandemic’s second wave are high enough that the city made the official call to cancel the Christmas Ferris Wheel for 2020, in hopes it can return for 2021.
There will, however, still be a virtual tree lighting in Gore Park on December 4th. Virtual Christmas Tree of Hope is a festive tree lighting that will be broadcast online.
There will be no in-person component to the tree lighting in Gore Park this year, according to the Downtown Hamilton BIA website.
Donations can still be made online, by phone, or in person. Check out the Downtown Hamilton BIA website for more information.
