Hamilton Bike Share extends its operations contract to 2022

In an assuring bit of news for bike share users in the city, not-for-profit organization Hamilton Bike Share recently got the green light from Hamilton city council to extend their operations contract for the city’s SoBi bike share program until the end of 2022.

This is certainly an announcement to celebrate, particularly after a tumultuous year for Hamilton’s bike share program that almost saw this popular mode of transportation pulled entirely.

“Thanks to all our riders, team, partners, and other stakeholders who have supported bike share throughout this challenging year,” said Hamilton Bike Share in an announcement.

“We will continue forward using funds from user revenue (membership and usage fees) and advertising/sponsorship, along with the crucial philanthropic and crowdfunded contributions we received in the summer.”

Hamilton Bike Share became SoBi’s new operator after an ordeal earlier this year in which SoBi’s previous operator, Social Bicycles LLC, announced suddenly that they were planning on halting the popular bike share service in Hamilton, citing a decrease in revenues due to COVID-19.

The news was readily met with an uprising of city staff, local advocates, and the nearly 30,000 Hamiltonians who make use of bike share who all scrambled to find alternative means of keeping SoBi alive in the city as a cost-effective and eco-friend mode of public transit.

These actions, which included petitions and a large fundraising initiative, managed to save SoBi and have it operate under the management and maintenance of not-for-profit Hamilton Bike Share; a result which saw enough money raised to keep Hamiltonians pedalling.
