Hamilton board game lounge Gameopolis is permanently closing its doors

One of Hamilton’s favourite board game lounges just became the city’s latest pandemic casualty and will be permanently closing its doors.

Gameopolis, located at 223 King Street East in the city’s International Village, announced through their social media yesterday that a number of contributing factors, including the struggles brought on by COVID-19, are leading them to close up shop after almost 8 years in business.

“This was not easy by any means – it was in fact a very long and complicated decision,” said Gameopolis.

“The lease is up for renewal at the end of this year and with a significant increase in rent coupled with some heavy personal life events and the ongoing COVID pandemic, all roads seem to be leading us in this direction.”

With a selection of over 1000 board games, snacks, and craft beer, Gameopolis has endured as a popular hangout for many Hamiltonians looking to get their game on. For just $5, locals could stay as long as they wanted and play any game on the shelf.

While Gameopolis had hoped and planned to let their patron base stop by for one last round of gameplay before the closure, they’ve ultimately decided to function as retail only leading up to closing in the interest of public safety.

The store will be reopening on November 21st and 22nd from 10 am to 6 pm and hosting a huge sale on their stock of board games, including a big clearance sale on the used board games.

Pop on over to Gameopolis this weekend to say goodbye and grab some games, Hamilton!
