Hamilton has surpassed 500 active COVID-19 cases

Hamilton hit some milestones over the weekend; but not really the kind we’re excited to hit.

For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Hamilton public health is reporting more than 500 known active cases of COVID-19 at once following a string of record-breaking days for new confirmed cases.

The city’s current case total sits at 503 known active cases, with a new overall total of 3,111 cases in Hamilton since the pandemic first touched down locally. Of that number, 84 have resulted in deaths.

The numbers follow a series of consecutive days that saw a concerning number of new daily cases reported, with 95 new confirmed cases reported on Saturday and additional 67 reported on Sunday to push the total number of active cases to over 500 for the first time.

It remains to be seen if the city plans to take further action to limit the spread of COVID-19, or if these trends will be enough for the Ontario government to move Hamilton from its current ‘red zone’ of COVID-19 restrictions into a fuller lockdown that will see a greater number of non-essential businesses required to shut their doors.

As usual, Hamiltonians are advised to continue diligently following public health’s established COVID-19 guidelines including staying home whenever possible save for essential reasons, wearing a mask in public spaces, frequent hand-washing, and not gathering with groups of people outside your own household.
