Hamilton stays in red zone as Ontario government puts COVID-19 hotspots in lockdown

Hamilton has – so far – avoided a second lockdown following Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s announcement this afternoon that some of Ontario’s COVID-19 hotspots are going into lockdown mode.

As of Monday, Toronto and Peel will see restrictions enforced including the total closure of restaurant dining rooms and patios, closure of gyms, limiting indoor sports practice to professional teams, and curbside pickup only for retail businesses. Personal grooming services such as hairdressers and salons will be ordered to close as well.

Additionally, Toronto and Peel grocery store and liquor store capacities will be capped at 50 per cent until further notice. Notably, schools will remain open, as will essential services like dental offices, doctors, and pharmacies.

Social visits will be strictly limited to those in someone’s immediate household, and Premier Ford says further announcements about province-wide measures for the Christmas holidays are to be expected in the coming days.

For now, Hamilton remains in the red zone of the province’s tiered guidelines for COVID-19 restrictions; however, with case numbers continuing to climb steadily in the city, a similar lockdown is still very possible.

As of today, Hamilton has 331 known active cases of COVID-19, with 36 new cases confirmed today alone and an overall total of 2,180 known cases since the pandemic began. Of those cases, 73 have resulted in deaths.
