HWDSB cancels final exams and relaxes graduation requirements amid COVID-19

Amid a highly unusual and adaptive year for local schools, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) has announced that they will be cancelling all final exams for high school  students and relaxing graduation requirements.

In lieu of the traditional final exams, students in Hamilton’s public school board will instead be assessed based on assignments and other graded activities through the semester that address overall learning comprehension.

The move comes in the midst of a difficult school year for Hamilton’s students, as they try to continue their education during a global pandemic that has deeply impacted the learning experience as well as students’ mental health.

On top of the exam cancellation, the HWDSB is also implementing a few relaxed requirements for graduation.

Firstly, community service and volunteer hours have been cut in half from the minimum 40 to a new minimum of 20, and students nonetheless struggling to reach the adjusted minimum can consult with their school’s principal or guidance counsellor.

In addition, the standard grade 10 literacy test is not mandatory for students this school year, and the grade 9 EQAO test – which is seeing a new format this year – won’t be counted towards a student’s final math grade.
