Flamborough-Glanbrook MP resigns after travelling to the US amid COVID-19

Flamborough-Glanbrook MP David Sweet announced his resignation as chair of the House of Commons ethics committee after traveling to the United States over the holidays amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is an increasing trend with political figures not following the recommendations of the government to not travel over the winter break in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Sweet announced his resignation on Twitter after federal Conservative leader Erin O’Toole asked all caucus members to refrain from international travel.

The Hamilton-area MP originally travelled to the United States for an unspecified “property issue” with Sweet’s office confirming he stayed abroad for leisure without informing anyone.

O’Toole accepted his resignation as committee chair on January 4th and was confirmed with a series of Tweets on late Monday afternoon.

“I am currently out of the country with my wife having reached this difficult decision, and will be back in Hamilton soon. I have resigned my role as Chair of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy & Ethics and will not be seeking re-election as MP,” read a tweet from Sweet’s account.

Sweet has been re-elected three times as MP for the former riding of Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale. He has served in the House of Commons since 2006 and elected by his peers to serve as Chair of the Standing Committee on Access Information, Privacy, and Ethics in October 2020.
