Hamilton has a new public light trail and outdoor skating rink

This year, more than any winter previous, spending time in the great outdoors has never been more cherished. We’ve all had enough time online and with no other indoor entertainment spots open, why not head over to the rink?

The new skating and entertainment spot, dubbed the Hanrahan Trail, is a new COVID-friendly outdoor space that’s sure to brighten your day.

Located at the corner of Barton St and Catharine St, it takes over the parking lot of the former Hamilton Strip — a building which will soon rebirth as a boutique hotel.

The outdoor venue is hosted by Modrn Events, who vow to use a portion of the proceeds towards helping small businesses during these tough financial times. As business owners themselves who have had to shut doors on two of their own businesses this past year, they understand that everyone needs a bit of hope and happiness right about now.

So what’s all available at the Hanrahan Trail?

To start, there are two outdoor rinks — one is a chiller rink, which means that it’s temperature-controlled and open regardless of the weather forecast. The second rink is a natural surface, meaning that it must be cold enough to maintain. Together they total over 5,000 square feet of smooth ice to glide upon or set up a friendly hockey game.

Skate rentals are available for $5 a pair and guests are invited to skate in 45-minute intervals for $6 each, in order to keep a safe capacity at all times.

To ensure a spot is available for you, it is encouraged to sign up for a time slot online ahead of your visit. However, walk-ins are welcome if space allows.

Once you’ve finished skating, you can walk off your sea-legs on their Instagram-worthy evergreen walking path.

This is a pathway that surrounds the area, decorated with lights and décor aplenty. It’s a relaxing stroll that will spark your imagination, and it’s free to enter!

This is a great option for those who aren’t steady on their skates but still want some fresh air. A $2 voluntary donation to help local business is encouraged.

After all that exercise, you’ll be glad to relax with a warm cup of cocoa and treats, available at their concession stand.

In the future, you will also be able to browse their outdoor market of local businesses and enjoy the outdoor heaters available.

Currently, the market is on hiatus due to public health concerns with COVID, but the concession stand remains open. They also hope to have live music and performers once restrictions are lifted.

Face coverings are required to enter this mini wonderland and there is available parking on-site. Reserve your tickets for skating and check out the status of the rinks online at modrnevents.com
