Hamilton hits 50 active COVID-19 outbreaks, sees downward trend in cases

Though overall case numbers are on a downward trend amid lockdown and stay-at-home orders, local public health is reporting that Hamilton currently has 50 active outbreaks of COVID-19.

The news came alongside new case numbers reported on Monday, which recorded 75 new COVID-19 cases in the city, bringing the current total of known active cases to 731.

With that also came the report of two new outbreaks: one an institution outbreak at St. Peter’s Residence at Chedoke, and the other a workplace outbreak at Harster Greenhouses.

The current makeup of COVID-19 outbreaks in Hamilton consists of 33 institution outbreaks, 10 community outbreaks, 5 workplace outbreaks, and two school or daycare outbreaks.

Of those outbreaks, the current largest is at Shalom Village Nursing Home, which was originally declared on December 9th, 2020 and has seen 184 total confirmed cases, including 92 resident cases and 88 staff cases, with 17 deaths so far.

Hamilton has seen 8,766 total confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic first began, 232 of which have resulted in death.
