Hamilton wins major award for its reconstruction of Locke Street

The City of Hamilton along with Coco Paving Inc. have been selected to receive the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) Award for Project of the Year in the ‘transportation $2-$10 million’ category for their work on the reconstruction of Locke Street.

“The project was recognized for its ‘complete streets’ strategy, construction management techniques and full reconstruction of one of Hamilton’s most diverse shopping districts in just one construction season,” reads a release from the city.

The reconstruction project, which took place from March to November in 2019, saw the creation of new curbs, bump outs, street furniture such as new benches, the planting of some urban trees, increased parking, and new traffic calming measures.

Additionally, the project involved underground improvements like new watermain and sewer linings chosen as the most environmentally friendly option available, and was recognized in particular for its proactive and cooperative relationship with the Locke Street Business Improvement Area, local stakeholders, and community groups.

Hamilton’s Locke Street reconstruction project was announced among other winners at an OPWA Awards ceremony that took place virtually on January 21st.
