At a time where it seems like a Hamilton small business is getting hit with vandalism or theft every other day, local food spot Poke Co has just seen their air conditioner unit stolen from outside of their storefront.
Poke Co, located on Ottawa Street North and known for their fresh Hawaiian-style sushi bowls, shared the news via social media on Wednesday that the owners had arrived to the storefront in the morning to find their air conditioner torn from its outdoor mount.
“Not the start to 2021 I was looking for!” they said in their post to Instagram, which was met with a string of sympathetic comments from local fans and supporters.
Poke Co has also shared the news to the Hamilton, Ontario section of Reddit, adding that a police report has been filed and asking locals with any possible information about the theft to get in touch.
Within the last handful of weeks, no less than four Hamilton small businesses have seen similarly senseless acts ranging from vandalism to break-ins and thefts.
At the very top of the new year, Barton Street cocktail bar Stardust shared footage of a mystery figure running by the front façade and throwing a brick through the glass front door. Shortly before that, Royal Flush Vintage Goods – another Barton spot – similarly had their front door smashed overnight.
Before either of those two incidents came the break-in at Vagabond Saints Tattoo Lounge, which had recently moved to a new location on John Street North. Security footage showed a figure breaking in the front door and stealing a cash box, along with an employee’s leftover jacket.
All of these recent incidents are undoubtedly large blows to the affected businesses, who have simultaneously been reckoning with the challenging impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
