Cancer screening coach returning to Hamilton area

The Mobile Cancer Screening Coach is returning to the road on February 11 offering cancer screening and smoking cessation to people who usually can’t access it.

Launched by Cancer Care Ontario, the coach travels around Southern Ontario to provide cancer risk assessments to newcomers, the LGBTQ community, Indigenious peoples, low-income neighbourhoods, and workplaces.

The coach started hitting the road back in 2013 and has made stops in more than 55 communities. They have done about 5,800 cancer screenings for patients said a report filed by the Hamilton Spectator.

In July 2019, the service almost stopped because of the provincial government slashing its annual budget. And it was determined that the Hamilton-area had enough resources to support patients.

However, the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation started to fund the coach and conducted a nine month review of the service.

After the review, the provincial government was prompted to give more funding to the project and the coach returned to the road in 2020.

Patients who wish to book an appointment can contact coach staff at (905) 975-4467.
