COVID-19 outbreak at Barton Street Jail grows to 28 cases

Just over a week after the COVID-19 outbreak was declared at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre, case numbers have grown among the facility’s inmates and staff.

Public health officially declared the outbreak at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre – also known as the Barton Street Jail – on February 15th, when a total of seven cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in two inmates and five staff members.

As of the most recent data report on the city website, that number has grown to 28 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 20 inmates and 8 staff members testing positive for the coronavirus.

The Barton Street Jail is one of 21 active outbreaks of COVID-19 in the city currently; a number which also includes a string of recent outbreaks confirmed at Hamilton-area schools including St. Ann Catholic Elementary School, A.M Cunningham Elementary School, and St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Elementary School.

Currently, Hamilton has a total of 356 known active COVID-19 cases, with an overall total of 10,205 cases confirmed since the start of the pandemic last spring.
