Adding a fourth effective vaccine candidate to the mix, Health Canada has just officially issued approval of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine for use in the country.
The vaccine joins those currently approved and in use from Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, and most recently, AstraZeneca; all of which have shown to be extremely effective in protecting individuals against COVID-19.

Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine was shown to be 85 per cent effective in preventing severe disease overall, and in preventing deaths and hospitalizations. Clinical trial data showed a 66 per cent efficacy in preventing moderate-to-severe disease.
One significant difference between Johnson & Johnson and the other three previously approved vaccines is that it only requires a single dose for full immunization, whereas the others are all administered via a double-dose regimen.
Additionally, the vaccine can be stored in warmer temperatures than others and is able to transported and stores in fridges rather than freezers.
Canada’s addition of another vaccine can also, ideally, help boost the process of inoculation thanks to access to a greater number of overall doses across all four vaccine candidates.
The federal government has reportedly ordered around 10 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, with the option for up to 28 million more as the year goes on.
More to come.
