Hamilton investigates alleged ‘inappropriate’ COVID-19 vaccine distribution

Hamilton Public Health is conducting an investigation following allegations that three employees working at one of the city’s mobile COVID-19 vaccination clinics administered doses to 15 individuals not currently eligible to receive a vaccine.

The alleged incident was reported to public health on March 5th by other personnel working at the clinic in question, and a release from the city notes that the three employees have been placed on paid leave in accordance with standard practice while an investigation is carried out.

“The City is committed to ensuring that COVID-19 vaccines are administered in a way that is fair, equitable and based on criteria that prioritizes those that are most in need. Any actions designed to circumvent the vaccine program’s eligibility criteria are unethical and unacceptable,” said Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton’s medical officer of health.

As the investigation remains active, Hamilton public health is reminding clinic staff about their obligation to adhere to the policies and established prioritization framework for the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

Currently, Hamilton is in the midst of offering COVID-19 vaccines to local priority groups including seniors over the age of 85, eligible healthcare workers, and those living or working in the city’s shelter system.
