Hamilton returns to COVID-19 lockdown today

As of Monday morning, Hamilton has officially made the move back into the grey ‘lockdown’ zone of the provincial government’s tiered COVID-19 framework.

The move to grey comes as cases continue to trend upwards in the city, with 738 known active cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton as of the most recent update.

Locals may be wondering what is allowed and what isn’t in the ‘lockdown’ zone; and truthfully, more activity is allowed than it was before, as the Ford government has relaxed some restrictions and made adjustments to the rules of the grey zone.

For instance, while restaurants in the grey were previously limited just to takeout or pickup, they are now allowed to have distanced in-person outdoor dining on an outdoor patio or dining district. That said, diners at one table must all be from the same household.

That allowance of patios has also prompted the City of Hamilton to accelerate the start of this year’s Outdoor Dining District program, with 81 patios in the city approved for use effective immediately.

Additionally, effective April 12th, personal care services such as hairdressers, nail salons, and tattoo parlours, will be allowed to open their doors with capacities capped at 25 per cent.

The grey zone also prohibits indoor social gatherings or organized events, with gatherings limited only to those who live in the same household together. Individuals who live alone may choose to combine exclusively with one other household.

Indoor facilities for sports and recreation – including gyms – are closed, though outdoor recreational activities are permitted with some restrictions in place.

Retail stores are allowed to remain open for in-person shopping, with capacities on supermarkets, drug stores, and other grocery retailers capped at 50 per cent, and capacities on all other retail including big box stores, liquor stores, garden centres, and cannabis stores limited to 25 per cent.

Hamilton will remain in the grey zone until further notice.
